Depending on your location along the path of totality, this phase will last between one and five minutes The sun's light will temporarily be covered by the moon, which is in just the right place in its orbit to appear the same size as the sun. Many ancient civilizations revered and feared solar eclipses as supernatural apparitions. Some people considered them omens of pending doom or of drastic change.
