You can’t always get what you want. Right? Well, that’s true when it comes to hats. Now I never thought that these cartoon splatters in Justin’s original design we’re all that gory. I thought it was more Wile E. Coyote than Kill Bill but that’s not how New Era saw it. And I respect that decision. New Era is a classic family brand one that, lets be frank, hangs it’s hat on MLB, another classic family brand. So when we we’re told to tone it down, I was happy to comply. In fact we’ve found that adjustments like that can improve a design. And while I’m not sure the new version is an improvement, I do think that it’s undoubtably a lateral move. And when it’s on the hat, it’s a much more subtle design. One that still tells the Roadkill story in a fun colorful way. That sounds like a +1 to me.

Tomorrow, we preview the hat and tomorrow night it goes on sale. Get it.

Lateral move yes… I kind of expected New Era to nix the blood pool… Hoping this goes on a grey hat to really give the road look..

agree with gmac… a dark grey hat with yellow stiching would take the roadkill story to the next level

I’ll be interested to see how you separated the skid marks from the background hat color.
— Tom Richards on January 4, 2012
Its a good solution, and even tells the story better. I just hope the hat color makes it pop. The original version drew my attention to the whole head more, and I think it is because of all the bright red. Can’t wait to see the hat! Great work!

I actually think the tire tread is an improvement. As Kevin says, it tells the story better. Either way, great work!

I like the tire marks better too.
Why was the blood on the Scrapes hat not an issue?
— Kai Takahashi on January 4, 2012
If you look over at strictlyfitteds, it appears its on a denim hat.
Kai brings up a good point about the blood on the Scrapes. I wonder what the logic is behind allowing one, and not the other.

Maybe it has something to do with it being a dead animal?
Either way, sick cap for sure!
— Juan Carlos Strickland on January 4, 2012
Looking at the preview of the cap on Strictly Fitteds, the denim is reminiscent of asphalt. I think the tire tracks are cool, I dont really miss the blood all that much. Good point brought up about the scrapes. If the tire tracks were red without the overt image of a pool of blood would that have been acceptable?
— T.J. on January 4, 2012
The tire tracks are definitely an improvement. I have no issue with blood. But I agree with Kevin, it tells a better story. It’s not the fact that the poor raccoon got killed but how it happened. And that makes it more clever. I even like the look better. Good work, guys.
