Dead Ramblin Scrod Shockers

So many good entries. Let the second half begin!

Chris! I am really diggin this design. The whole thing is so cool. The name, the alternate mark, the hat mark. Perfect. This thing would look great embroidered. Your style is great. One and done! Perfect.

Q! Another epic entry. The colors are awesome and the design is really iconic. I feel like you could stand back 25 feet from this and still tell that it’s the Ronins. I think it would look great on a dark cap and with only the white embroidered. Very cool! 2 newbies, 2 one n dones.

Brendan! Love these ambitious redos. Warms the heart. I think you’re on the right track with this. It has a lot of personality which is a real feat for a fish. Yes, the rendering is crude but I think that we could get this thing solid and ready for embroidery in no time. Never seen the letter on the end of a bat before either, great idea. And rhyming is underutilized, more of that please. Toot suite, done. Great work!

Kevin! So dope. This hit a couple of the trends, impressive. The C is cool, that S is the jam. Cool if that’s what we use for the voting? One n done.

  1. Just a quick note about my Shockers logo. I strongly prefer the eel/”S” version, but I was concerned there might be too many details for a hat logo. That led to the “C” logo, which I personally don’t care for as much. Maybe the “S” will still hold up on a hat. We shall see.

  2. Chris, not much to say here. I think you are right on the mark. Perfectly simple and the interlocking letters are tight. Looks great!

Q, awesome design. Not really my flavor, but my buddy is all over this cap. He loves that stuff. I agree that the hat should be black (or at least dark), really make that thing pop.

Brendan, awesome redo! That fish is sweet. Love the eyes and the mouth, dude’s got attitude. Also, like Casey said, great use of the end of the bat, really well done.

Kevin, I loved the rough draft you did and this is even better. Way to make him angry. I think the S logo should definitely be your #1 and not the C.

    Nice round everyone!

  3. I love the Dead Hens simplicity. Great idea for a story. I like how the mark goes straight to the point.

As a huge fan of samurai, I love the ronins idea. Cool design on the kabuto, but to get this off the charts, it needs color in a bad way. If this were perhaps had a red/gold lacquered helmet it would be so sharp and really pop! The whole helmet/ design being primarily white is really hurting this and its making it look unfinished. I like the use of the baseball in there, but immediately I thought “what if the baseball was actually wearing the helmet?” I love this idea and design, I wanna see you set it off because I would certainly cop this hat if it were taken up a couple notches. Good job, keep it up.

Scrod is a big improvement. I like the facial expression, the bat perspective may need tweaking but its all good. This has a nice old timey quality to it or something, I cant put my finger on it…

Shockers is really sharp. Nice rendering and design. The S is far and away the better of the two. Iconic and easily readable. Great job

  4. Kevin – I agree. I would love to see the “eel S” on the hat. Or, maybe even that logo on a white shirt. Could look awesome. Great work as always.

  5. Kevin, this is a great-looking S logo which would look great on a cap. I’d wear that! I know what the shocker is, but I only wonder if it’s still too legit sounding. Did you do any eels with a surprised look on its face?

    — Tom Richards on May 4, 2010

  6. @Tom: I really didn’t want to travel too far down that road. I wanted the story to be that they chose a new logo that they really liked, and didn’t even realize until the last second that “Shocker” had this other dirty meaning, and then the whole redesign was scrapped because of it. I just wanted to flirt with the inappropriateness with this logo. I still wanted it to be something that people might want to wear without having to explain the surprised look on the eel’s face to everyone who asked.

  7. If i didnt know before i looked at it that the name was Ronins, i doubt id recognize it as one. I think the name is a good idea, but like TJ said, some color would help.

The Shockers looks great Kevin (stick with the S, the C doesnt have the same life). And im with you on the point that the logo/concept doesnt have to be WAY out in left field. The story itself can make it a reject alone, without the hat itself being wacky and bizarre.

  8. Absolutely love the expression on the scrod’s face…well done.

  9. Kevin- The Shockers is seriously awesome, love the rendering. I completely agree that the “S” is far and away the stronger mark and I feel like it would hold up on a hat just fine. Good work!

  10. Kevin – been waiting for this one since we got the sneak peak from Casey, nice job! the “S” version is the way to go, the only thing i’d like to see is the bottom half of the bat to be alittle thicker.

  11. If i were gonna nitpick: the area where the lightning bolt meets the body of the eel bothers me. Why does it change color? And why so abruptly?

Small issue though, the rest of it looks nice.

Warfare Chris on May 4, 2010

  12. @Warfare Chris:
I was really struggling with how to integrate the bolt with the body of the eel. A gradient would be the best way to go, but it isn’t an option. The easy thing to do would be to have that part of the eel go behind the bat, but I liked how the eel was wrapping around the bat and didn’t want to upset that. I had actually sent the in-progress version of this to Casey for his advice on how to handle that transition, but by the time the in progress version got posted, I had already come to the conclusion you see here. I still don’t love the transition, but I honestly can’t think of a better way of handling it. I am very open to any suggestions. Its tough!

  13. @ Kevin: I don’t mind the color change. To me that is the “shocking” part. Great work as always!

Q! No doubt that is a Ronin the second you see it which is obviously one of the keys to a great logo, but I have to agree with everyone else, that the whiteness makes it lose something. Give us some color and make that thing pop!

Brendan: I like the new scrod and the “CC” on the bat. I’d like to see maybe that CC bigger and the logo smaller inside the CC? Maybe I’m Dreaming?

LDH! Ha! Love it. I really like the “alt” lettering too!

  14. Thanks guys for the constructive feedback!

The design is more a test to check whether the silhoutte of the character holds up.
I wasn’t caught up with too many colors though but i understand your points of view.

I will tweak some stuff and send off the updated version.

Got some more ideas floating about :)
