Now, Chris’ version was great. It won a spot in the contest right? But we had a few concerns. One, the thinness of the pitchfork. The design is a simple silhouette and we wanted to be free to raise the embroidery where we needed to raise the embroidery. So we thickened that up. Two, Chris’ original was a little tall and narrow for a cap application. On paper it’s hard to see this as a problem, but the “canvas” of a fitted baseball cap is much more wide than it is tall. When you see a logo that’s too tall and narrow, unless you’re the Fightin’ Bean Poles, it can look like the logo is off. So we widened the proportions. Chris is a passionate man, and we love that. So it took a little convincing. But after a few back-and-forths he trusted us , with one concession, that we put his original eye back in. Done.

One more thing. How good does the Walbats colorway look? Great, right? It’s the Yankee colorway so there’s got to be something to it. But this is a Sea Devil. The obvious, last minute change…

Tomorrow, we preview the cap. Sunday, available.

Wow it looks great. Ill be picking this one up for sure.

The only thing im not a fan of is the loss of the chubby cheek. It gave it a lot of character.
— Jesse V on August 4, 2011
looks to have a Cleveland Indians colorway, yeah? like it…
— Tanas on August 4, 2011
The red directly on the blue is nice, something a little different. I think overall the proportion change was very successful too. Really interested to see it in thread!

Shoulda stuck with the original head, quality..
— Adam on August 4, 2011
The final version handsomely illustrates the strength of quality collaboration. While there’s merit in both the original and proposed, the final version looks balanced, sharp, and feels true to the starting point. The red on blue colorway is a nicely understated complement to a subdued, yet impactful mark.

Sure do miss that cheekbone. It was the only thing that gave the logo some sort of depth, it feels much flatter now. The other changes are small and probably for the best.

Really like the colorway. I can’t wait to see this in thread because I have a feeling the raised embroidery will do wonders for this design. I own the Walbats, which is a very flat design as well, but the way C & J used raised embroidery in certain parts of it really sets the design off. I feel that this design has the same potential. Great work guys.

Bryan really nailed it. This was a true collaboration with a lot of back and forth on both sides. I miss the jaw line/cheek curve as well, but this thing looks really nice with the raised embroidery levels. It really adds some dimension that doesnt come across when its flat.
Overall im really happy with it. The colorway really pops more than i thought it would. Kinda like the Indians, as Tanas mentioned. Im looking forward to the reactions tomorrow when the actual picture is revealed.

Also, the revised eye was a huge point of contention for me. I loved the eye i designed, but Casey had a valid point about the fine lines not coming through when embroidered. So they substituted a much bolder eye that i just didnt think fit as nicely with the rest of the logo. So Casey sent me their file that they had worked on, i re-worked my original eye to be thicker and bolder…and at the end of the day it was a great collaboration, with both sides happy with the final product.

Chris, great call on going back to your eye styling. The way the right edge of the “brow” lines up with the last sharp bump leading into the snout is great attention to detail…amazing how much of this little guy’s swagger is in the eye.
— Bryan on August 4, 2011
Thanks Bryan, Casey added that bump to the snout to give it a better seahorse likeness so i integrated it when re-designing the eye. It think it came out nicely.
And i couldnt agree more about how important the eye really is to the logo’s personality.

If any ones interested you can see a small picture of the hat at strictlyfitteds.com. From what I can see its lookin good.

^ Aha! Yeah it is there, and from the looks of it, its pretty bad ass. Way to go Chris & Plan B. The spirit of collaboration definitely came together to produce a sweet cap here!
— T.J. on August 4, 2011
yeah everyone… i bet if we chill i wouldn’t be surprised to see that cheek come back using raised 3d stitching. the outline in the original suggests either negative space or another stitching color…
the 2d design is probably going to come to life like bananas with monotone raised stitching like the Wallbats.
— Tanas on August 4, 2011
This is one of the dopest designs yet! I cant wait to add this to my stable. Excellent production as usual! I love that you guys post the whole design process. Its neat to see the project from start to end.

Oh man! I took a peek at the banner on Strictly Fitteds. This one is going to be amazing! Simple, strong design in an understated color way. Maybe we’ll see a navy and white on the reprint edition. Congrats!
