B.T.S. – T.J. Monteiro’s Shams Pt. 2

Posted by casey on August 18th, 2011

DONE-IN-PHOTOSHOP. DONE-IN-PHOTOSHOP. My god T.J., you know that the style you’re getting in Photoshop with these is emulating Illustrator? It’s like your building a house and I asked what you used to dig your foundation and you pulled a spoon out of your back pocket. More utensil metaphors, weird.

  1. Photoshop? Seriously? I don’t know if you’re just looking for a challenge or if you’re crazy, but the results speak for themselves. Great set. My only issue is that the marks tell two stories (Little Red Riding Hood, and the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing). Though, they are similar stories. Great work!

  2. LOL wow, the spoon thing just had me rollin! Yes I have somehow managed to not go insane using ol Photoshop, It does take a while and it really is foolish to not be proficient in Illustrator. What I normally would do is that I would plan out my design, draw it, ink it, put it together and color it in Photoshop, then I could “trace” it in illustrator (with some luck). I will make the promise to myself that by the end of this year, I will know illustrator so that I can work accordingly, its a shame to cripple myself by not taking the time to learn (that damn pen tool). lol a spoon…

As for the Gramma Sham wolf head, Kevin, if you recall when the Shams was originally shown, Casey suggested a piece of red cape be shown in his mouth. Then I think it may have been you or someone else commented that naturally that was a different story and different wolf so the whole idea was dropped. I decided that might be a cool thing to try, see what it might look like if we used that wolf, after all the story was different but the theme was the same – wolf trying to pull a “Sham”. I gave him some spectacles, a kerchief, a piece of reds cape and switched the staffs to those old school walking canes and there it is. Just and exercise for fun, but I think it still works pretty well with the theme.

  3. As a side note, I have named them as well, the wolf in sheeps clothings’ name is Shim (Shim-Sham)… and naturally the kerchief-ed one is just Gramma Sham cause all Grammas need no first name. (My Gramma just turned 90 yesterday – Happy Birthday Agnes!)

  4. That S that S that S!!!!!! Is classic

    — SLAY on August 18, 2011

  5. The S is the best thing about this super A+ design. I am a sucker for thick outlines, and that might be the only thing I would change to enhance the look. But that’s really easy to do in Illustrator; not so much in Photoshop….

  6. Yeah, yeah The ol “S”…that’s one of the reasons I’m saddened about the fact Clink isn’t doing the patches or shirts anymore, I thought it would make for a great patch since I know many wanted the S on the cap. I guess this design just came in a little too late for those perks. Slay maybe you can lobby for the S cap somewhere down the line!

  7. TJ I love the hat as is and I am standing in virtual line right now for this one. As for pen tool I guess I got lucky because I don’t see the large challenge that people say omes with using the pen tool. Now for Illustrator I am in the same boat as you are about needing to learn it. I think I may have opened Illustrartor less than five times and I know I have to learn it so that it can take my digital art to another level. The patches yes I am having a problem with that because as it stands right now I am stuck in the middle of a project that I can not finish because of the “No Patch” Injunction.
So TJ thank you for the design I have placed my shoes by the door awaiting the arrival of my box on next Wednesday so that I cap premier this one on Monday at work. I can see my people throwing up as soon as they see it because they can’t not contend with the sickness of this hat. This will be number 56 in my collection and officially give me a different Clink cap everyday for 2 weeks straight. This one is on the level of The Richmond Rhinos.

  9. Yea its dam near a sin that S is not being used on this cap! Put it on the side of the cap or something sheeesh! Lol

  10. Thank you for your pro illustrator declaration. I want to pull my hair out working on collaborations with Photoshop suckers. It has its place. It’s in the name. Besides that rant, this is awesome. Probably my favorite drop yet. One I might buy.(sorry guys, not because I won’t, but I can’t. I may break the swear jar open for this one) I love the “sheepy” one for than the granny(happy bday to your gran. Mine was an Agnes as well) Could this be the first clink room with a second alternate cap. The S is that good. What’s the thought on colorways? Or do we have to wait and be patient?

  11. Make it the away cap dam!…..How crazy would that S look white embroidered on a smoke grey cap!!!!!

    — SLAY on August 18, 2011

  12. Ramo, I’d like to thank you greatly for your support, I’m happy to see people excited for the release, the hat may surprise some but the execution is so fresh. Clink did some awesome work with it. I’m happy that you chose to add my hat to your expansive collection!

I would be all for it if Clink opted to put the S on the re-up caps (when and if these sell out). An alt would be really cool I think.

Also I would love for everyone who does pick one up to snap a pic of them rocking it, I love how clink promotes that gotta keep that going on worldwide.

  13. Also, Eric thanks for the birthday wish for her, Agneses are awesome aren’t they?

    — T.J. on August 18, 2011

  14. T.J.! Love this behind the scenes look. Such great sketches, even better artwork. Can’t wait to see this on a cap.

  15. Th how about this one, how about since Clinkers are asking for a special reup edition even before it drops why not do that one in limited limited edition and make this a rarity of its kind.
I’ve been clinking for less than 6 months and I have gone back to the first post to find out about these guys and what they do before buying and I love what they do and what they stand for. What about making a benefit edition since the bp joint went to help others?

    — Ramo Mitchell on August 18, 2011

  16. Thanks much Jeff. I enjoy sharing my sketches and thoughts. Im excited about my design joining the fraternity of Clink caps, its really an honor.
