We rebranded the Mahoning Valley Scrappers a couple years ago. The team all ready had a classic mark, Scrappy the Bulldog. We wanted to update him a little, added a chain to his neck instead of a spiked collar, cleaned up some of the rendering style. Our next task was to expand the Scrappers’ Universe. The Clink Room’s latest Official On-Field offering, the Scrappers Official Home Cap, is newest part of that Universe. Get a closer look in the Shop.
They liked the idea of the hat becoming a creature. Here’s a look at some of our other explorations of that idea…

Wow! These are awesome. I always love when you guys show us the sketches of those that didn’t make the cut. I feel that we all learn by seeing your thought process through the sketches.
I think the “M” with the tongue hanging out of it (page 2) would be a cool alternate hat, as well as the dog/baseball with the chain around on the third page (top left corner). Also, the slanted ‘S”/dog mouth would look really cool on a shirt.
I really like the ones with the chewed bones in them. There is definitely something to the baseball/dog head one. I really like it!
You guys are so great. I feel like I’ve become a better designer simply by looking at all of your stuff and trying to take it in and learn from it. Please keep these “behind the scenes” sketches coming!
The contest here are pretty cool but for us that were here from the beginning of The Clink Room…..this is what it is about, the process. I love this stuff! I sketch more now than ever because of this site. I agree with Erik and Kevin when it comes to the baseball/dog head one. That one is great. I also like the one on the very top, a ball of chains holding the 2 bats together. Awesome stuff guys.
I agree with tq. I think my work has gotten much better from following this site and learning from everyone’s designs (not just Casey and Jason’s). I would be very sad if anything ever happened to this site!
Good call Kevin, I should have pointed out that everyone here makes me better. Sometimes, before I get into rendering something, I’ll go through all the backlogs and find designs I really like or parts of designs that I really like and use those as references. It really would be a shame if anything happened to this site!
The ball/dog is so great its ridiculous. I love it. I wish there was a fitted with that featured.
The gnarled bone is also very fresh. I especially like the one with the wrench and hardhat and the one in the circle of chain.
I Think one of my favorite aspects of the clink room is seeing these sketches and ideas from the design process. I love how crisp and lively the sketches are.
I worked in the Scrappers clubhouse last season (with the legendary Travis Fryman) and I want to commend you both on an excellent design update. Of your other concepts, I love the “MVS” logo in the 2nd set of logos. I thought all season that they needed something like that, especially on the red batting practice jersey or as a sleeve patch! I enjoy wearing the Scrappers navy hat around and constantly being asked “what the hell team is that?”
That Base-Bull-Dog thumbnail is ILL!!
