Introducing – Omaha Storm Chasers

Posted by casey on November 16th, 2010

Jason and I are proud to announce the unveiling the Omaha Storm Chasers. The Omaha Storm Chasers are the Triple-A Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The team had been named the Royals, but with the advent of a new stadium it was time to give Omaha’s hometown team a name of it’s own. We tried to keep it as Major League as possible with the tornado character there to inject a little Minor League fun into the equation. The “O” with the lighting bolt looks so excellent on a cap. Ah heck, they all look great in person. We’re really happy with the wordmarks as well. I was particularly happy with that “Omaha”. It’s going to give the uniforms a really clean look.

  1. Great job as always. I really like the interlocking “SC”. That is my favorite part of the set.

  8. I agree with Kevin…the interlocking SC is BY FAR the best mark in the set…Great Job again!….Are we to expect any more Minor League teams that will be unveiling new logos courtesy of Plan B this offseason?

  9. Nice work dudes , I really dig the main ” O ” logo , but I really like the font for the letters and numbers … Keep up the good work

  10. The O bolt cap is solid! Superhero-esque. That twister cap is dope as well. The color theme sort of reminds me of my new local Dodger affiliate, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Great job as always!

  11. A bit of Flash Gordon inspiration on the Omaha wordmark?

  12. There has been quite a bit of backlash towards these logos on sites such as Chris Creamer’s board, and others, with the most common criticism being that these logos are essentially too cutesy for a AAA farm team. I was wondering if you guys could share you mindset when you design a logo set such as these. Do you go into a project trying to position it as “professional”, or “kid-friendly”, or anything like that? Is the style you choose reflective of what sells the most merchandise as opposed to reacting to a subjective thought of what a AAA team “should” look like? Does the look get influenced heavily by what the client wants, or is your reputation solid enough to be able to get your ideas across the table? While some people are reactive negatively and making their arguments, there is a whole other side of the story that isn’t getting out there, and the Clink Room is a great place to share those thoughts with us. So, will you?

  13. Its a tough name to work with, nothing really concrete in imagery that comes to mind.

I like it just dont love it. Think what is throwing me off is the back and forth of colors from blue to black. Doesnt seem to be cohesive.

  14. I need to state plainly and simply that I love that O-Bolt logo. Perfect for the league, city, team name, and application. Also, the SC mark is right on point, and the idea of the Twister mascot is phenomenal. I read the uniform color scheme change from Blue/Gold to Black/Gold as a storm in its own right. Sky changes from Blue to Black in a bad storm. With me, guys? My only gripe would be the number & wordmark fonts. They seem too much like an altered font, as opposed to an inspired, custom look that matches the rest of the identity perfectly. Again, I love most of this, not trying to bring any negativity into the Clink, but that’s just my opinion. Can’t wait to see BTS sketches for this team.

  15. Cleanly and professionally rendered, as always, guys. That said, I’m just not “feeling” this one.

It is just too all over the place for my liking. Home and batting practice uniforms that are predominantly Royal Blue and Twister Gold. Road and alternate uniforms that are predominantly Blackout Black and Twister Gold. Four different caps. Two different mascots. It all strikes me as making for a brand identity that doesn’t quite know what it wants to be.

I concur with Eddie Ray that there’s something about the custom alphanumeric font that you’ve developed that gives off the feel of a previously-existing font being “altered” for this job. I can almost see it being used by the San Diego Chargers, rather than the Storm Chasers. Maybe that’s just the colors and the lightning bolts talking. In any event, a wordmark comprised of it makes for a pretty tame primary logo for a team named the Storm Chasers.

Sadly, I can’t even say that I understand all of the love being lavished on the so-called “O-Bolt”. It strikes me as being a bit… well, “meh”. Further, it doesn’t really mesh very well with either the aforementioned customized font, or the stylized lettering that the interlocking “SC” is rendered in.

Speaking of the “SC”, I don’t know whether the client requested it, but in addition to standing for Storm Chasers, it is also a nice nod to the fact that the team now plays in Sarpy County.

Sorry to be so pointed in my critique, gentlemen. I guess I’ve just become SO used to being completely blown away by the majority of what you do that anything less just strikes me as pedestrian. I’ll stop now.

  17. The numbers are awful guys.Should only be worn by a Arena League football team.Baseball numbers should be wider…8″..Think Yankees,Red-Sox.

You’ll get it straightened out next time.
