This is my next thing to look forward to sharing with my son. He’s only 1 year old, but I’m already counting down the days. What do you guys think is the right age to show him “A New Hope”? 5 years old? 4? 3? 2? Tonight? You know how parents have to toil with the “When will we have the sex conversation” with their kids? I’m already toiling with how to keep Star Wars Part 1-3 away from him.

omg that’s so great.
let’s see… i probably saw episode IV when i was about 3, because i can remember crying in the kitchen when i found out my sister was going with her friend to see Empire and i was too young to go with. so yeah, somwhere in that 3-4 year range (to me) is the sweet spot, because it lives with me totally!
as for eps I-III…. good luck. the animated Clone Wars is tough to avoid, and it leads straight to those installments.

When I was 4, I was in a “Star Wars Club” with some kids on my block. The day after seeing Empire, I want over to one of the kid’s house and completely ruined it for the whole family by telling them Vader was Luke’s father. His mom was so pissed she yelled at me and kicked me out of the house. Star Wars is serious business!

This is so funny, I’ve been thinking about writing a blog post about the same thing. I’ve been wondering if it’s too early to show my three year old New Hope. She has a Star Wars ABC book and has been asking about it. We are debating, but I don’t think it’s any scarier than Sleeping Beauty or some of the other early Disney stuff. I think we might give it a whirl pretty soon.

Part of choosing the right age is him being able to get the significance of it. You don’t want to go too early, so that it just blends into the collage of cool creatures and lightsabers.

casey – update: i had lunch with my mom and she concurs it was probably 4 yo, *maybe* 5 (i’m sticking with 4… 5 yo would be after Empire).
for me, i totally got it. about higher callings, destiny, bravery, imperialism, freedom, the force of the universe that binds all nature together…
4 years old man… it’ll be sweet!
