Danny! This is awesome! Great character, lots of great touches and Amsterdam Easter Eggs. But hands down the best touch is the fry hanging out of his mouth. So great. I’d like to see this guys simplified. Maybe ditch the baseball diamond shape, the ball and frame him with another bat maybe? Maybe just a feather pattern edging for his right shoulder? He looks like a pigeon which is great. But that fry! Great stuff!
Danny! I’d love to see this all done in 1 color in silhouette. It would really make it iconic. Love it! Great stuff.
Ryan! Whoa! Scary. I love that you can’t tell what body part it is. Is it a crazy claw with 4 thumbs? Is it a disembodied mouth or the mandible mouth from Predator? Awesome! One-n-done!
Marcus! Very cool, very scary but in different way than Ryan’s entry. I think it’s great but, I’d ditch stars and the guns and stick with the dude. I really like his bandana and could see that pattern done on the visor fabric. Very cool stuff! Lets see it cleaned up!
Slavo! This is great way to do an alien themed hat. I really like the hand a lot and the markings is a great idea. I’m wondering if you could combine the markings and the hand more closely. Like maybe they’re tattooed on his hand or carved into his hand kind of like a Guillermo Del Toro character? But seriously that hand is awesome! Great start!
Scott! Love the simplicity of this but it should be a saw blade and not a gear, right? Also, the style doesn’t fit the story as well as it could. What about giving it an retro-trademark vibe? Or a burned into leather vibe? Great start!
Mr. Z! The gambling riverboat man is such a rich area to draw imagery from and I live the rat character you created, I think it has a lot of charm and elegance to it just like a rat in a suit would. I’m wondering if you could reposition him so he’s coming at us, or at least looking at us. I’d also like to see a playing card tucked into his hat band or some other storytelling element that would help kick this story off. Great start!
Jordan! Way to keep it simple. I feel like the entries in this competition have been too complex. I think you’re close but I’d like to see some other ship marking on this “A”. Maybe some blue or red striping, maybe a porthole or 2. Great start, now think more iconic, more story!

Casey—Just wondering if with tomorrow’s post you could give us a sense of what date you are up to in terms of submissions. I know my first was submitted Feb 21 and it has yet to make an appearance. Just curious as to how backed up you are with submissions. I love seeing what everyone comes up with.
Kevin, I send these submission on the 21st as well, so yours should be reviewed very soon.
I sent an entry in on the 21st too.
My entry is up there live right now, and I sent it in on the night of the 20th… You guys sound like you’ll be right up!
Danny (Squabs): That’s a lot of character in that pigeon. That smirk is great. Two bats, one on each shoulder, could imply the baseball diamond shape without it being explicit. Maybe slightly adjust the fry so that it either distinctly crosses the bat or does not. That it is so close is a minor irritant, emphasis on the minor.
Danny (Icari): Wow! You’ve been able to tell the Icarus story while maintaining a more abstract design. For someone who is just looking primarily for a logo with great aesthetic, you’ve created something great. I also appreciate the stylistic differences between these two logos today!
Ryan: What is it besides awesome? It looks to me like teeth. Keen detailing on the dappled shadows of leaves on the H!
Marcus: editing your logo to just the Desperado with the searing red eyes is the way to go. I’d love to see that element larger, and to get a better logo at the bandanna pattern detail. Great start!
Slavo: I didn’t catch the “V” on first look. Love it! You almost have too many ideas here, each of them great. That two-fingered had immediately read “alien” to me, but the crop-circle element (is that what it is?) is also great. Looking forward to how you edit that!
Scott: Nice start. You have several strong elements at play, but are the black outlines necessary? WIth strong details and solid rendering – and with the gear changes to a saw blade – you’ll have something really wonderful.
Mr. Z: Now that’s a major league update! So much a different character compared to your original now that the gambling details are there. Nicely done!
Jordan: Strong work! My only critique would be to work on the waves to look like water. The highlighting on them now gives them a plastic feel.
I sent mine in on the 21st and and 25th.. But now regret that I didnt do a wordmark for either, it defo gives it that extra oomph..
I love the simplicity of the Admirals, my first thought was put a porthole in the centre of the A, but Im not sure if it would take away from the cleanliness of the design.
Keen to see the re-do of the River Rats, such a great character..
Hodags??? Im going to have to look that one up! AWESOME design Ryan.
Good to see you still making Great Designs Slavo!
I’ve always thought of a river rat as a muskrat, but I like this version much MUCH better. That’s one dapper looking rat.
Love that River Rats cap!!!
thanks all! i’m struggling with the idea of adding the card in the hat only because it reminds me a WHOLE lot of the old evansville aces logo (http://goo.gl/dr8te)…
any other suggestions?
Thanks for the critiques on the Admirals!! I’ll do my best to make improvements – Nathan, I see the plasticky water now as I read your comment. That was bugging me, but I couldn’t place it!
This is a great round of submissions. The Icari has such a strong silhouette, can’t wait to see it! If that cog gets switched to a sawblade (like was mentioned earlier) it’ll be bangin’!
Danny – Really cool character right here! I just feel there is a few too many elements, that said keep that awesome fry! Nice job!
In regards to your Icari design, not sure if I’m feeling this one. I’d roll with the suggestions made.
Ryan – Nice to see an entry from you! And what a great one it is. Congrats on the done!
Marcus – Nice start, I think simplicity is the key here though.
Slavo – Really feeling that Alien Peace sign! Great idea! Great work!
Scott – Nice start, you know what to do now, so go at it!
Mr. Z – Such an awesome character! I don’t think it will look like the Ace’s logo at all, as the card in the hat doesn’t define the character. Looking forward to your re-do.
Jordan – Another one from you, you’ve been busy! I don’t really know what to suggest on this one though. I’d roll with Nathan’s suggestion of changing the waves. Keen to see what you come up with.
Mr Z I think it’s cool if you use references from your hometown team I use a TC for my snowman logo and the st Paul Saints mascot is a pig just like my pig eyes entry!
I mean to a point as Long as he’s not a person with a long beard dressed in purple.
Sorry never mind on the beard thing I was thinking of the Ohio state logo. Never mind sorry for all the comments.
Thanks, Ryan! I’ve actually got 2 more that should be showing up before too long. I wanted to get a fifth design in (all together), but the time ran out before I could solidify it. It was the St. Louis Archers – but I still got in a design for Chicago and Phoenix. It didn’t seem like it, but yeah, I guess I was busy! Haha!
Mr. Z,
On a serious note, I think the card in the hat and maybe a match stick or toothpick hanging from his teeth would bring out more of his story.
I don’t think of the Aces as much as a very famous baseball player from Sedamsville who is now banned from baseball for gambling!
