Snow Gold Miners

Remember everyone, we post the entries in the order that they were received. So be patient.

Cody! I love this concept and your gold nuggets are exceptionally accurate to real life gold nuggets. However, we peddle in stereotypes and iconography here. I want to see big badass nuggets. Like lumps of coal but gold. I love the “G” you’ve used it’s bold sleek. But I want you to go find the mining scene in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and recreate the wall of that mine but replace diamonds with gold nuggets and make the whole G out of rock and gold. Now go.

Jake! NO GRADIENTS. But other than that I think this is a really cool concept. Lets work on making the “L” more “L” like. Maybe shorten the back of the pickaxe? Can we make the curl at the top of the “L” more elegant? How can we add a little pop color in there. It’s a fine line to walk, but a logo doesn’t always have to use the colors of the object of animal itself in the design. Great start!

Todd! This is dope! I love how dynamic this snowflake is. It reminds me of a sleeve logo that we did a long long time ago for the Green Bay Blizzard Arena Football team. We did that identity while we were still in college, jeez that was a long time ago. But I love this thing. ONE-AND-DONE! First one of the contest. Great work now lets see another one!

  1. Motherlode Gold,
Love the shape of the G, nice and thick. As Casey stated, adding more gold to it will spicen it up nicely.

    Louiseville Miners,
Nice and easy concept, maybe lose the curl and the gradient though.

    Layton Snow Falcons,
Todd, this is just epic, man. Congrats on a well-deserved one-n-done.

  2. Thanks for the feedback, looking forward to more!

JMC is correct, the G represents a modern-day gold pan. The ripples in the pan help move the water in a way to separate the heavy gold from the rest of the lighter sand. Here’s a good example of what’s usually left over, some black sand and a bit of gold: http://goldprospectorstore.com/web_images/img_2963.jpg

Another aspect of the design that can be lost without the story is the layout of the gold nuggets. The gold in the logo was based on a map of the state’s largest mines during the gold rush of the mid 1800′s. Hard to see without a CA silhouette, but I didn’t want to be too literal. Here’s the map:

The combination of these two features is supposed to give a past and present theme. While most of these large mines have been closed for many years, locals and tourist can still be seen in the streams daily with their new green pans. Hope the background story helps clarify some of the design aspects.

Jake and Todd, really nice stuff as well!

  3. Motherlode Gold
Agree with Casey, could use more gold, but off to a great start.

    Louiseville Miners
I like the concept. A few tweaks and you’re definitely there.

    Snow Falcons
Phenomenal work. Really great design. The Winnipeg Jets should’ve hired you for their logo. Well done.

  4. Cody – Great concept! I’d love to see an alt with an old metal pan. Also, I’m picturing some nice gold thread on this one. That said, as suggested try some over the top nuggets and you’re gold! (pun intended)

Jake – Nice start! my suggestions would be to shorten some things and fatten it up. Looking forward to your revision.

Todd – I’m with Mike Shaw, this is what the new Jets logo should have looked like. However, that said Go Oilers!

ps. Todd looks like you were space hungry and used the “old” template…

  5. Thanks guys, I appreciate the positive responses. I have been a big fan of The Clink Room for awhile now and I finally decided to throw my hat in the ring. There are so many talented designers in this group it is awesome to get feedback from everybody.

Motherlode Gold – Like everyone else I really like this idea and think the basin shape of the “G” is great. I agree with Casey that the gold chunks could be larger and more pronounced. I can envision this on a dark hat with the gold threading in the chunks really standing out.

Louisville Miners – This concept is really cool and with some refining of the handle in the pick ax this could be a great icon.

  6. that snow falcons logo is awesome. I do wish that the wings were maybe a bit more defined? I didn’t really see the head of the Jet till I really started to look at it and saw the cockpit. Have you tried maybe adding silver instead of blue to the wings instead? Just a thought

  7. Len, thanks for the positive comments. The wings are actually silver now, they are the two smaller pieces toward the back of the design. The wings are tucked back for speed on the jet instead of directly out to the left and right center of the image. I was trying to make the image as dynamic as possible to equate to speed. So the jet is in a speed maneuver with the wings tucked back and the perspective of the graphic is adjusted to look like it coming out at the viewer. Let me know if you have any other suggestions, I love getting feedback from everyone!

  8. Cody, I like the Gold Miners idea, very similar to the Sacramento Gold Miners from the mid 90s. I too would like to see some monster nuggets in there. We don’t want dust! We want monsters! Love the big fat G.

I dig the Snow Falcons and love the “hidden” jet in it. This one should get green-lit for an actual hat.

  9. Cody: It was helpful to read some comments pointing out that the “G” is referencing a plastic pan. I didn’t see it at first, but after the fact it helped to understand that color and shape choice. Did you play with other colors? Maybe a solver or slate for the G or a dark forest green hat? Maybe with more gold nuggets (in metallic gold!) and some silt to really play up the story?

Jake: by this time I’ve seen your revision, so my comments might be moot. I think the curved, curly end of the pickaxe handle makes sense in a “Baseball script” sort of way, but I think the logo would be better served with just a straight handle.

Todd: Clever and well rendered. Awesome. Not really too much more to say except I’m looking forward to other entries by you!
