Copper Steamer Kosher D-Cer Platys

Martin! This guy’s a badass. Love the copper helmet. I think there’s a little too much detail but for the purposes of this contest… One-n-done!Hometown-MartinLopez-01

Toban! I love all the detail in this one. Those bats are killer, great work. I’m wondering if there is way to make the design more dynamic compositionally? The bottom of the logo seems…um…flat. Can we see him leaning in or busting apart or something? Cool colors too. Great start!Hometown-TobanAllison-01

Kim! Glad to see a revision. But this is one of those instances where my suggestions made it not as good. I liked the old version better. That means the old one was a one-n-done! First post dated one-n-done!Hometown-KimShafiroffB-01

Sascha! When I got you entry I was pleased that you not knowing Illustrator didn’t prevent you from entering. I always love seeing entries from people who have this idea that they want to enter so they figure some crazy way to get it down. I’m talking to you T.J.! I really love the owl and the “D” but I think the flame is unnecessary. That owl is a great faux-retro work. Well done!Hometown-SaschaPhilipp-01

Lencho! I love the character, a little too detailed but very cool. I think you could ditch the “C” in favor of an insinuated “C” made up of his arm. See it? Now off to Williamsburg for overpriced beer you bearded hipster.Hometown-LenchoRamos-01

David! Very clean, very cleaver. That green gets lost on the maroon though, I’d love to see this done in a classic bike racing colorway. Very good though. On-n-done!Hometown-DavidSanchez-01

Aussie Ry! Shouldn’t it be “Platies” or “Platys”? Unless this is a logo for a bar themed around natures most amazing mammal. But’ll forgive your grammatical errors because of how awesome that character is. 2 things and then it’ll be one of the best entries of the contest. Make Platy bigger and make the bar of the “P” thinner and only yellow. I want that “P” more legible. Other than that this thing is spectacular. Great work! Hometown-AussieRyan

  1. Aussie Ry—Love the platypus. Not sold on how he forms the “P”, but the rendering is great. I almost think the platypus could stand on his own without trying to form the letter. Very nice!

  2. Martin: That’s a lot of rage right there! I could just imagine some miner out of his mind with copper poisoning (if that’s even a thing). And if that helmet was embroidered with metallic copper thread? Fantastic!

Toban: I’ll admit, I had to look up this clocktower to see your reference. But when I did, I could immediately see what you’re aiming for. What if the clock face was bursting off the tower, steam shooting from around it?

Kim: There’s a lot of character in the sandwich. You have an interesting challenge in including the marble rye bread, but I love it.

Sascha: Is there a connection between the owl and your city? I’m sure that knowing the connection would inform the appreciation of the design, but there’s an appealing simplicity to it already. No Illustrator of Photoshop? No problem. Way to not let anything get in the way of an idea!

Lencho: I can see what Casey’s going for. What if the entire arm was bare? Maybe with a wheat grain tattoo? Or maybe that’s too close to the Stockton Ports recent release. I do like the energy in the shape of the beard and mustache.

David: Aside from the colors (referencing roses?) this is great! Nicely done!

Aussie Ry: No criticisms of your skill, but perhaps the platypus could be larger? Small complaint, though, as this is awesome! I do love a good “P” logo. For some reason, it’s appealing to me, and I love how you handled it here. Great!

  3. Lencho- I normally don’t like human logos but this ones so cool.you could go without the C. I also Agee with Nathan add something to the arm. Maybe you can simplify him a little more and make him bigger if you get rid of the C.

Ryan- that’s the coolest platypus illustration I’ve ever seen I don’t think I can give any more advise than what’s already been said.

Kim- I love this guy he’s done I don’t have any suggestions

Sascha- I’m glad I’m not the only one not super familiar with illustrator but eventually u can get a hang of it. The owl is awsome maybe give him a little more detail and make him bigger and the D a little thinner and smaller

David- change the colorway that’s all I can say.

Toban-I agree with everything said before?

Great round of entries everyone. Looking forward to seeing more entries. I can’t wait to see mine.
P.S.Is this the pace you are going to post the entries?

  4. Martin: just checked out your Skinwalkers revision on your blog. Form the few edits I can see, it already looks greatly improved. Keep it up! I think that’s your better concept of the two when accounting for idea, story, and execution.

  5. Lencho – Love the cervecero character, i think simplifying it would put it over the top. Is that suds at the bottom of the C or is he kicking up dust running to drink the next round? haha!

David – your hat is my fave out of this group, the simplicity and cleverness makes it stand out! I agree about the colorway needing an adjustment, I was going to suggest yellow to reference the yellow jersey of the Tour De France, but that is also the color of Livestrong, so maybe not :-)

Ry – LOVE that platypus! and I agree with Kevin it really doesn’t need to form a P to be awesome!

  6. First off, Casey I really appreciate the kind words, it truly means a lot! Especially when I was already sketching up my angry version re-do of this little guy before you posted this. My bad on the grammatical error I guess my head was elsewhere, maybe still at the pub? this is the Clink Room after all…
ps. my mac is in the shop at the moment, but I’ll get on that re-do for you asap!

Thanks to Kev, Nathan, C, Foogos & Efra for your comments. It’s great to hear some positive feedback. I think I’ll work on Casey’s suggestions to make the “P” more legible and then give the solo Platy idea a crack too! ;)

Martin – I’m a fan of this guy, his helmet would look dope done in copper thread. Nice work!

Toban – I’ve actually been to Gastown! Really digging the angry clock face. My only suggestion would be to play with the perspective a bit and you’re done! Great start!

Kim – Congrats on the retrospective one-and-done! That said, I like the colourway on this one.

Sascha – Good on you for giving it a crack! It’d be great to know the back story on this one. Good start!

Lencho – This guy is sweet! I say roll with Casey’s suggestion of the “C” arm, you might have to curve his body and head to suit but if you pull it off, it’s gonna look cool! Cool name by the way.

David – Clever stuff, this is really going to appeal to all those “bikers” out there! My only gripe is your choice of colourway.

  7. Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone!

I was indeed going for a rose reference. I tried to go with a more muted rose red color and apparently it came out too maroon-ish and overpowers the green. A brighter red would have felt too Christmasy. I’ll get it in a different colorway, hopefully with better-looking results.

Love the Platypus logo, Ry! Awesome work.

Lencho – the insinuated “C” that Casey mentions will work best for your idea. Great start!
