Cheese Rat Bat Steaks

Aussie Ryan!!! First up with a bullet. This character is inspired by an urban legend of a bat, called the Embat, that ignites wildfires with a flap of it’s wings. I love the story, I love the Aussieness of it, your rending skills are wonderful. I’d like to see you take this guy more human torch though. The fur on his head is already there, but could we cross his ears with a flame? What about his nose? That tuft of hair on the pop of his head could be a great spot to play up that flame vibe. Right now it’s a great looking bat character with a flame in it’s eyes. Now I’d like you to intertwine the idea of bat anfd flame even more. I love it you’re really onto something!

Scott!!! This is so great. I’m a Jim’s man myself, what about you? I think you’re spot on with this design the only thing I’d add is more cheese on the leg of the “P” to help sell the “P” ness of it. The sandwich itself is a great start to a very bold “P” now lets make the cheese the volume of a very bold “P”. I think 2 or 3 drips should do it all at varying sizes. What do you think? Amazing execution and a really fun concept.

Jesse! The Flying Rats is such an epic fictional team name and I love the idea of working the Statue of Liberty into the design. I want you to look at the Stapes pigeon and all the different ways that they use the pigeon in their design. And then I want you to avoid anything similar to it like the plague. After you’ve studies that, I really think you should start with that alternate crown element and build from there. What about a pigeon head instead of the baseball? What about a rat with wings and the Liberty crown? I’d also love for you to try and go silhouette on this concept. I think it’s a complicated idea and using the silhouette would help you distill the rendering style to it’s basic elements. Try 3/4 angle, try front on, try whole body. But epic concept and a great start to the design.

David! SD represent. First off, ditch the text. No need it’s a crutch that will make your design stronger when you don’t rely on it. We’ve also had a bunch of zombie entries in the past and while none have be produced there are still some strong entries. You mentioned in your email that you wanted the arm tattooed and I think that’s a cool idea but it’s unclear in this rendering. I also think that it would be tough to show tattoo and melting flesh in the same design. It’s asking a lot of the design. So I’d pick one direction and add in another SD element. What about a zombie hand holding a burrito? What about a zombie seagull? What about a zombie surfer getting tubed in a wave of blood!? Great start lets see you take this thing up a notch.

  1. Not sure I’d wear it, but I am totally digging the cheesesteak design. Very clever. I agree that more cheese for the descender would make this great. It kind of has an 8-bit quality to it. Might be nice to see some of the highlights on the cheese extend vertically and not just rest at the bottom of the drips.

  2. Of these…the Philly CheeseSteaks really stands out. Nice work! I like the Embats concept as well. Would like to see it with the suggestions that were made.

  3. Are these all of the designs that you’ve received so far? I sent my entry in a few days ago and just wanted to make sure that you guys have received it.

  4. Embats
    - I really like the concept so far, I do agree on giving the logo more of a flame element to it to truly give it that ember feel. I like the colors too, gives me a feel of like a chemical burn or something. Great job

    Cheesesteaks
    - Great idea Scott, I feel that the bread itself can use a bit more texture possibly? I’ve only eaten a few cheesesteaks in my lifetime and never in Philly, so I may not know what the real deal is like, but I bread looks like it could use some toasty texture to it. I like the idea of making it form a “P” as well, very clever, but I didn’t get that idea initially. I can see the P if the cheesesteak was viewed from the side angle, but that would take away from the dynamic of it. Great start.

-This colorway is ridiculous. Right away I could see myself standing in front of the statue of liberty. Love the idea so far. I do agree that the ball can use a bit of an angle to really make it visually “Flying”. Maybe if it had a streak that disappeared behind something?

    - I think you’re on the right track. I don’t know the whole back story and idea behind the concept, but the hand is definitely visually appealing. I really get the feel of being in a graveyard and something popping up from the ground. The gritty texture definitely adds to that feeling as well. If you were going to keep the idea, I might disconnect some of the dirt and pebble elements from the arm itself and have them look like they’re falling. Nice job David

  5. Casey – As always thanks for the kind words and the constructive feedback, I get what you’re saying about playing up the flame vibe. I’ve already toyed with the idea a bit, so I’ll get back onto that stat. Flame on!

Dylan – Ha ha you know the Adelaide lingo, I’m sure I could have called the team “Radelaide Embats” and people would have been none the wiser… ;)

Len Kori – Cheers, glad you like it. I thought I’d steer clear of the typical fire colours (ie. reds and yellows) and go for a little more of a subtle flame colour scheme, hence the blue and neon.

Scott M – Even though I’ve never had a Philly one, I love me a Cheesesteak. Great Concept, thicken that leg of the “P” and you’re good to go.

Jesse V – Whoa! now that’s how to utilise the smaller template! Great concept, but I think your Alt. was the way to go on this one. Looking forward to your revision.

David S – Nice start, I’d look back at the previous undead hand entries and try and make yours stand out from them and give a different spin on the idea. Great start.

  6. I designed the Philly CheeseSteaks logo, and I thanks everyone for the feedback. I’ve never gone out of my way to enter in a contest like this before, so I wasn’t sure what the reception would be like. I’m just glad no one has told me to kill myself.

I was so excited to submit this that I didn’t bother sitting on it for a night and shipped it off right away. I’m going to rework it with the suggestions mentioned. Thanks for the tips!

    GINO’S. WITH. FOR LIFE.

  7. Scott – The Shadow League was my first go at entering a Clink comp and if you look at my original Philly Fat Rats entry and then my revision of it, you will see that sometimes it pays to just get it in and rework it once you’ve had some feedback. Looking forward to seeing your revision!

  8. Embats – Ryan, this idea is amazing and I agree with you I like the unique colors you chose for this design. I think Casey is on to something by making the hair around his face and on the top of his head more flamelike. This finished product could be incredible!

Cheesesteaks – This concept is genius, I just think the bread looks a little “log” like. If you can make the bread and cheese a little more dynamic I think this design will be tough to beat.

Flying Rats – I agree with the posts on here that the alternate logo is where the money is at!

Resurrects – I think is you got rid of the text and maybe made the hand look like it was coming out of the brim of the hat this could look cool with the colors you chose.

  9. Ryan! My friend! Sweet Embat! Glad to see you’re still killing it on design. You did a great job making a bat WITHOUT batwings: not an easy task, and yet you nailed it! I think my favorite parts about this design are the nose and how muppet-like it is. I agree that there should be more flames, and I think Casey’s note about that tuft on the top of his head is THE best bet. WHAT IF he was breathing smoke out of his nostrils? I know that nose is legendary, but man… definitely worth playing around a bit. Keep up the good work!

I wanna eat that sandwich. Like, right now. Epic melt, Scott!

Who’d a thunk a pigeon dropping could be that fun? Pretty much only Jesse! How hilarious would it be if the dropping LOOKED like something majestic, a la the Virgin Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich? Not gonna lie: I might pee a little.

Zoooooombies! Casey’s notes are right on the money. We did a zombie themed pub crawl in Reno, and they’re logo used the EXACT hand out of the grave idea, except it was holding a tall boy. But man, David, so much unexplored Zombie-ness is still out there! It’s also a sweet opportunity BROADEN what we already perceive about zombies. Think of all the dead celebrities, or historical figures that can come back as zombies! All you gotta find is that San Diego something and make it a Hometown League icon.

  10. Corey B! Cheers for the kind words. Yeah I wanted to do exactly that, stay away from the epic Walbats and go with more of a fun mascot look without relying on wings at all. I guess the easy option would be to add some flaming wings either side, but the challenge is where it’s at! Smoke from his nose is a great idea! I’ll give it a whirl and see if it works. Looking forward to your entry too.

Scott – Just a suggestion, I think if the bread was rounded a bit more (like on the edges) it would help lose the “log” look as Todd put it. Also I reckon some pieces of steak hanging out the end would set it off nicely!

  11. Being a Philly guy myself (and I’m with Casey on Jim’s COMPLETELY. Gotta love all the famous autographed promo pics hanging up), I would so rock that cheesesteak hat.

Actually, all of these designs look terrific.

The Embats looks absolutely insane. Not a fan of the colorways, but I need to have my wardrobe with more color anyways, so I would definitely rock this.

LMAO @ Casey mentioning Staple…..LOL. I like the idea of where this hat is going though. The Liberty crown was an EXCELLENT idea.

I love the Resurrects idea, but I am not a fan of that Red with the Green….it reminds me too much of Christmas.

  12. A little late to the commenting party, but anyway…

Ryan: The Embat rendering is terrific, and I like the subtly of seeing the flames in the eyes. However, I’m not sure if it reads as a bat immediately. At first glance I just see an interesting monster, then, after a few seconds, the ears and nose start reading as “bat.” Without the team name I’m not sure if I would have gotten that. Maybe wings to the right and left in a color that is very close to the cap color? Or maybe its not important to be clearly a bat?

Scott: I love the idea of a food-related icon. Your rendering of the cheesesteak is great, and I agree with Kevin that it has an 8-bit feel. So close to perfect!

Jesse: Something about the contrast of the hard edges of the Statue of Liberty crown with the smooth curves of the pigeon poop is appealing, especially as their shapes are so reminiscent of each other. However, I wonder is treating the latter in a more asymmetrical way would be better. Perhaps droppings running down only one side of the baseball?

David: Nice rendering of an undead hand, but there’s a lot of detail going on. I’d agree that either tattoos or zombies can be pursued, but not both. Maybe a hand bursting up through a sandcastle to connect it with a San Diego beach? A hand with crooked fingers thrusting upward clearly indicates “zombie,” but I think some connection to the city would be helpful. The juxtaposition of a rotting hand in greens bursting into relaxes shades of light blue and sand might be nice.

  13. Nathan – Cheers for the kind words, yeah I was kinda going for the whole it doesn’t need bat wings to be a bat sorta thing. I guess the nose and ears pulled it off and isn’t that part of what makes it cool kind of not knowing exactly what it is?…That said, I’ve already submitted my revision(s) to Jason & Casey and have left it up to them to see which one they prefer. So watch out for a NEW Flamier Embat (which is probably going to make it look even less batty for you, but hey it’s an urban legend anyway, right?) Glad you like it!
