Yeah, yeah, it’s cool to be a nerd nowadays. But you merely adopted the nerdness. I was born in it, moulded by it. Here’s a few things that you’ve probably seen, but in case you haven’t…

Here is an article about 4 dinosaurs that the science writer Brian Switek, author of “My Beloved Brontosaurus”, thinks should be in the next Jurassic Park movie!

This, I know you’ve seen, but I want it on my premanant Clink record. Patton Oswalt’s epic Star Wars filibuster from his Parks and Rec. episode.

Longtime Clinkers know that I’m a Podcast fiend. One of my new favorites is Nerd Poker from Patton’s good buddy Brian Posen. It’s Brain and his friends playing D & D! It’s funny, it’s interesting, it’s super dorky. There is even an amazing episode with Patton guest appearing to deliver one of his legendary dwarf drinking songs. It’s very NSFW but it’s so funny. Head over to Ear Wolf to download their adventures.

I always liked Chewy better than Han, here’s a picture of my coffee cup that I use in the office as proof. And here’s Han being a real jerk to to best co-pilot ever(Sorry Jason and wife).

I love me my Podcasts. Love em. Listen to at least 3 a day. They are the best thing to design to. I’m convinced that podcasts are made especially for designers. I can’t write an email to save my life with one playing. But get in Illustrator, get in front of my sketch book and podcasts will treat you right. In the ever changing an growing world of podcasts here is my updated list of my top recommends for July 2012. Get on all these. (Disclaimer: Some, and by some I mean all, of these podcasts can get a little adult in their themes. Just language and a little real talk. Still worth a mention before you play these on a road trip with your kids.)

Nerdist! Made up of Chris Hardwick, Johan Ray and Matt Mira. I really love these guys. It’s one of the most sincere podcasts that you’ll find. Authentically nerdy. Very entertaining. They have great guests and their “hostful” episodes are always fun. It took me a couple listens to align my grove with theirs, but it’s worth it and par for the podcast course. Check out their scene here.

Doug Loves Movies! Do you like game shows? Do you like comedians? Do you love movies? Doug Benson’s podcast is a recording of his live show where him and his comedian buddies play games, talk about movies, and yell at each other. It’s always entertaining. Check out their scene here.

Comedy Bang Bang! This podcast has recently been turned into a show on IFC. It’s the weirdest of all my Podcast. It took me 10 listens to really understand what the hell was going on. But it’s worth it. Hot Saucerman is the host, he and his powerhouse guests act out the strangest collection of improve I’ve ever heard. Strange and amazing. Check out their scene here.

Professor Blastoff! Man this is a great show. Tig Notaro, David Huntsberger, and Kyle Dunnigan pick a topic, usually scientific or sociological, sometimes have experts join in. The conversations usually run astray of the topic but it’s always interesting and funny. Tig is dry and hilarious. David is sincere and curious. And Kyle, well, Kyle recites rhymes. When they’re not cracking each other up, they’re making fun of the producer Aaron, when they’re not doing that, they’re sharing valuable life lessons. I love them all. This is another podcast with sincere hosts and I love that. Check out their scene here.

Uhh Yeah Dude! It’s not really a podcast as much as it is a dancecast. I’ve mentioned Jonathan and Seth before on Clink. It’s still my reigning champcast. Just listen to it. Just get to know it. Just love it. UYD4L. Seat belts. Check out their scene here.

I saw this video of the legendary and amazing John Lasseter, head of Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios and the new head of Disney Imagineering. What a trio of titles, right? Definitely one of my heros. This video chronicles Mr. Lasseter’s epic hawaiian shirt collection (My Pops also has an amazing Hawaiian shirt collection. Not a cheesy one either, real classy-like.). The video is cool and all, but it reminded me that John Lasseter was once a ride operator for the Jungle Cruise. He mentions it around the 1:05 mark.

Why is that significant? Well, I’m glad you asked. Our very own Jason has been obsessed with the Jungle Cruise for many moons. He used to give impromptu “Jungle Cruise” tours around the quad at our alma mater, Helix High School. A spot-on never miss a word performance too. Really impressive. So impressive is his Jungle Cruise knowledge that in 2007 Jason answered a call to win a chance to be a guest Jungle Cruise Skipper for the day. And he won! See, dreams do come true. Wanna see him in action? Well, here ya go…

Just to explain a bit, Jason used to live in Florida now lives in Vegas, hopefully we’ll get him back to SD soon. And yes, this is how he talks in everyday life. Like he’s announcing his own personal horse race in his mind.

Branding. So I guess I’m making up for lost time. Here’s a glimpse of a project we did last year for the Everett AquaSox. Tom, the GM up in Everett, asked us if we would come up with some ideas to liven-up their team store to better showcase their new look. We came up with a bunch of ideas that they could execute on their own and do it cheaply. This is a look at the elevation sketch we dreamed up. (Click here for a larger version of the image.)
Tom told us that the best thing has been these cell phone camera photo spots that we designed. Simple cheap fun. Just like Minor League Baseball.

Once Jason and I finish branding a team the work rarely stops there. And one reason we love working with teams like the Spokane Indians, besides they’re all really fun great people, is that they understand a brand needs to be treated like a living breathing organism. Even a brand like Spokane’s, which has a very classic look, needs to constantly be evolving to stay fresh.

When Otto, one of the ringmasters up in Spokane, asked us if we wanted to take a crack at 3D-ifying their logo we were pumped. Spokane has helped us create countless new services that we now regularly offer all our clubs. Keep on inventing guys! I became obsessed with mesh gradients in Adobe Illustrator a few years back. The Clink Room’s site is almost entirely designed using them. If you don’t know what they are or how to do them here is a link to 20 tutorials.

What’s great about this type of file is that it can be scaled and printed to the size of the State of Washington without changing the resolution. Just like all Illustrator files but with shading! All of you entering Clink Room collaboration contests in Photoshop, get on the Illustrator wagon. I’m talking to you T.J.
