LAST CALL! I’ve had some computer troubles over the last couple days. And I’m nervous that someone’s entry got lost in the shuffle. If you emailed me an NEW entry and haven’t seen it up here please email it again.
Casey & Jason
I apologize for the confusion. If you have a re-do get it to me by the end of the week. At this point all re-dos will appear on the ballot not as their own posts. I hope everyone that needs to read this does so.

Eli! Two great entries. Normally I would just pick one entry form from a team and post it. But I really think that both the Main and the Alternate are great. I especially like the alternate. Kick ass idea for a design, and very well executed. Both one and dones, very impressive.

Slayer! You and your Nike. Jay and I talked over the weekend about doing sneakers. Maybe with Nike or Vans. Could be cool. I like this color way a lot. Which do you prefer?

Alright, get those entries in before the end of the week!

  • Seems like a slap in the face to The Clink Room to completely abandon the SSL logo and just throw the swoosh on there.

Whats the point? This isnt a Nike sponsored contest.

  • Relax man just a reminder to the clinkroom that nike and clink would mesh very well..And did u forget who came up with the concept for this league??Its not that serious!

  • I dont think anyone has forgotten who came up with the concept for this league. Youve made a point to constantly remind people, any time the opportunity presents itself.

  • Lol yea

  • Thanks clinkroom.
@CHRIS – Why the animosity? It’s just an idea.

Posted by Eli on January 20, 2010

  • ……..and oh yeah, the skaters is the same colorway of the up and coming Koston sb dunks…… that’s why there’s a nike sign.

Posted by Eli on January 20, 2010

  • Why would you put a Nike Swoosh on a New Era cap?
If you guys knew anything about copyright laws, you’d already know that you can’t just slap a Swoosh on anything and think that it could just be treated as any graphical element. It’s a registered trademark, the same goes for all trademarked logos. Maybe thinking that this would add strength to the identity of the LA Skaters was your goal, but it actually takes away from the design, and it complicates things even more from a fabrication standpoint.

Other than that, maybe tone down the colors, the red and the yellow contrast too much with the blue background. The logo is supposed to be a play on the LA Lakers? Maybe throw in some graphical elements that speak more about skateboarding than just some type and the colorway of a shoe that is coming out. It’s the SSL, remember?

  • Wow it seems like everything I do…Is followed by a negative comment I already said it really aint that serious!! I hope all this attention follows me to the voting polls!

  • Well, Its good to see things winding down with the contest and we are getting all the entries finished up and submitted. Im looking forward to the new site and the next project. However I want to take the opportunity to voice my opinion on the voting/ballot process.

I do not think that we the designers, should be voting at all. I didnt think it should have happened in the TSL and I stand by that now.
I do understand Jason and Caseys motives for it – getting clinkers involved in the process and giving them a voice. Buy in my mind they have done just that by opening up the competition and accepting designs in the first place – them giving us a place to present them to everyone is in essence allowing us to be involved in the process.

I think that the best thing for all of us would be to go with Jason, Casey and whatever guest judges THEY choose to decide which hats will be chosen and forgo designer voting. They would narrow it down to the top 8 (or go from 16 to 8 or whatever), then choose whichever one(s) would be produced.

I think most of us have multiple designs in the contest, so if we all have 3 votes, than its safe to say that individuals are going to vote for their own hats. Now that is completely understandable, after all it is a competition and any red blooded designer wants his to succeed. Maybe not EVERYONE will vote for their own but I would venture to say that its a good possibility. Then at that point it might come down to what, chance that a vote goes one way or the other? Does this lead us to say that the best possible designs will be chosen? I dont think that it does.

I say this because, IMO, the TSL left too many really really good entries on the table, and I think that the we, the designers, got a few of the top 8 wrong. Now, I know that Im not the end-all be-all of judges or an expert or anything, but I would imagine that some of the clink vets would agree. I mean I saw some awesome entries and I was shocked that they didnt even make top 8, and hey maybe people just didnt like them as much as I did, but then again I think that if the panel of judges chose rather than us, Im thinking we would have seen some differences there. I dont know that it would have affected which were chosen as our top 3, but still. Now If Im offending anyone, I apologize cause thats not what Im trying to do.
What Im trying to do find a way to fill our leagues with the best possible content, and I think the best way to do that is to let Casey and Jason (and those they chose as judges)decide what is best for the prosperity and viability for the league. whew

  • I couldnt agree more, with everything TJ just said. I think the judges should be a combination of REAL designers, as well as people within the “hat industry” (like they did in the last contest with the guy from strictlyfitteds), and possibly someone involved in the related field (skateboarding, in this case).

    Thats my “vote”.

Posted by CHRIS on January 20, 2010

  • I think that would be the most fair in all cases for everyone involved.

Posted by stefan on January 20, 2010

  • First let me say that I really like the redo of the Tre’ Flippers Eli! A totally different direction from the original, and Josh the new LA Skaters is solid, but I liked the purple & gold of the original as a play on the LA Lakers. Either way, good stuff from both of you…

I kind of agree with the voting suggestions, but my suggestion would just be to not let people vote for their own designs. I had multiple entries last time, and this time as well. Last time I only used one vote for myself, and then for two others (although none made the top 10). I think those of us who put the time and effort into the process deserve a voice, but if we were forced to vote on what we REALLY thought were the best rather than voting for ourself that would be a win-win.

  • Yea u guys are forgetting about muah Mr slay Iam in the panel of judges …I feel what your saying TJ the best caps were left out from the last league in my opinion. But lets not just switch everything up just becuase.I dont plan on just voting for just my designs…I want the best caps to come out of this concept I created point blank period. If none of my designs dont make the cut iam not gonna sit and cry about it..But most of the people in the clink didnt even want the skate shop league to happen in the first place..So I might be just a little heated if none of my caps dont make it to production. But what really make a person a real designer? anyone that can create a logo from nothing is a designer in my eyes! But look at strictlyfitteds.com and see all the ugly hats that get released every week.Theres a fitted that suits everyone style..So when people choose to say my caps are not impressive or any other negative comment they really sound stupid…To each is own thats how I look at it. Ive seen fitted hats wit just a dot on…now how does new era produce a cap wit just a dot on it?? I have no idea but guess what new era still got a check off it.But when u guys do start voting…vote on caps that actually represent skateboarding….Ps and if one them donut caps make the top 5 I just might blackout!

  • Yeah, Jeff, I also thought that if we were not permitted to vote for our own, we might have had a better and truer indication of what the best entries were/are. But in reality, it just muddles the process unnecessarily.

I agree with you that all of us deserve a voice – we exercising that voice right now, as we have been throughout the contest. We were critiqued, given props/suggestions and the like from Plan B as well as our peers and it was up to us to put our best foot forward. But in the “real world”, our work isn’t to be rejected/accepted by fellow designers – we have the obligation to please the client, am I right? (in this case, Plan B Branding).

Im glad we are having a constructive dialogue about this, Im interested in seeing what the others opinions are.

Posted by T.J. Monteiro on January 20, 2010

  • ^ to Slay, I agree wholeheartedly with you statement about some of the (in my opinion) ridiculous designs that get produced by companies. And Im confused as to why the powers that be say that “this is whats hot!” because often, I dont agree. But, hey like you said, who are we to say what one person should like, all we can say is what we like, right?
You get a vote in the process along with Jason, Casey and whoever/how many other Judges will be called in for this project. How that will all balance out is up to Jason and Casey Ultimately. I would think that when it comes down to it, they will have the final say, as they should.

But we are all big boys. I would like to think that we can deal with disappointment rationally and maturely should we not make it.

Posted by JSLAY! on January 20, 2010

  • And by the way if one of my caps is picked I plan on giving 5 of the 10 caps u receive to the fellow clinkers…

Posted by JSLAY! on January 20, 2010

  • @T.J., I agree with you that the voting process could be fixed, but I think the end product would be the same either way. The top 8 might not necessarily be the best 8, but I think the winner(s) will definitely deserve it, because in the end as you said Jason and Casey have the final say on what gets produced and they wouldn’t attach their name to something that wasn’t worthy.

Posted by Tim on January 20, 2010

  • True to an extent Tim, however the 1st cap set to be produced for the TSL was not selected by Jason and Casey, but rather selected by Sole ATL (or as was my understanding). Now I dont know if the idea of retailers “drafting” teams for the TSL is still a road that Plan B is pursuing, but J&C (with help from judges?) have apparently selected 2 more (bulls, chupas) for production without a retailer connection.

“Best” is a matter of opinion naturally, but if we do continue our voting, I hope that we can revise the voting process to make it more streamlined and organized.

Posted by T.J. Monteiro on January 20, 2010

  • U guys sound like your crying let history take its course and be happy if your caps is selected.U guys are the ones who voted for those caps from the TSL.

  • I can’t understand how a participant could also be a judge in this competition, especially one that had mentioned how heated they would be if none of their caps made it to production, or how they would give their hats away to people if their designs were voted on. Seems a bit underhanded to me, just my 2¢

Posted by stefan on January 21, 2010

  • I didnt right that giving my caps away comment lol someone thinks it funny to use my name…And as far as me being heated a little about none of my caps making it to production of course I came up with this whole concept!!…But stefan relax man some of your designs are in my top ten..like I said before I want the flyest caps to move to the front of the line! I dont plan on just voting for my caps that would be kinda of lame! But I do plan on giving a couple caps to fly clinkers…………lol

Posted by JSLAY! on January 21, 2010

  • The fact that you “came up with the whole concept” should mean nothing as far as whether you win or not. You say things like that, then a sentence later you claim you just want the best hats to win….THEN in other comments you claim that anyone who doesnt like your entries “just sounds stupid”. You aggressively defend yourself one on hand, then come back and say “its not that serious” when someone responds with a valid point. In the same token, you’ll ask “where is the feedback for my hat?” when its posted, then when the feedback isnt what you wanted to hear, you reply with statements about how they “obviously dont know anything about fitteds hats or skaters”.
…..Maybe you should sit back and think about your reactions and comments, before posting them, for consistency sake…if nothing else.

(Btw, you can call me a hater all you want, but all im doing here is stating my observatons and opinions, based on things you’ve said in comments. If you feel some kind of way about it, maybe you should take a look back at some of your comments, and see how they come off)

….at the end of the day though…“its not that serious”.

Posted by CHRIS on January 21, 2010

  • for the record josh, you didn’t come up with the “whole concept” for the league. your idea was a “skateboarding” league. in fact, you and all your friends were going in the complete WRONG direction with the league until someone ELSE actually suggested the skate shop league. everyone else (actual designers) were behind the other league ideas. the only reason you won is because your name was tied to “skateboarding”. don’t pat yourself on the back too hard, you’re not that clever…
