Lets start Aaron Bird’s behind-the-scenes! One of the coolest hats ever by-the-by!

Lets pick Arron’s brain. Aaron, tell us about your process in designing Nocturnals.
“The Nocturnals came together quite quickly for me. It was mostly about the approach and the process. I didn’t have to labor too hard with the design since I wanted the look to be a simple mechanically drafted style after I had my idea. When I started thinking about the Night League I wanted to avoid the expected. I thought, what is night? The theme of darkness came to me and I mulled it over a bit. I wanted to refrain from being literal at first. I liked the idea of breaking through the darkness and using that ability as an advantage. That’s where the big glowing eyes came from. I had thoughts based around nocturnal animals, predators, car headlights, and night vision technology.
Those sparked a memory of my pets when I was young. I was always fascinated when the right light hits their eyes and they glowed a brilliant color in the dark. My childish imagination wondered if that family pet had become possessed and was here to wreak havoc like some scary movie cliché. And that is where my concept came out. Big glowing eyes in the dark. I thought that would make for a striking icon on a hat so I began to rough out some visuals. Then I researched nocturnal animals and how their large eyes assist them in nighttime activity. But I wanted my creature to not be a predator but a survivor of the dark unknown wild; and Lemurs came to me. I have always appreciated the funny odd faces on them so my design is quite lemur-like. The concept comes through best in the color way of bright green in tonal darkness.”

Tomorrow, we’ll see Aaron’s sketches!
